Soft HR vs. Hard HR: What's the Difference?
Soft HR and Hard HR are two different approaches to human resource management. Soft HR is a people-centered approach that focuses on the well-being and development of employees. On the other hand, Hard HR is a more results-driven approach that focuses on achieving organizational objectives by emphasizing productivity, efficiency, and profitability(Personio, 2022)
Soft HR:

- Employee empowerment: Soft HR promotes employee involvement and participation in decision-making processes. It values employee feedback and uses it to improve organizational processes.

Hard HR:
Hard HR is focused on achieving organizational objectives by emphasizing productivity, efficiency, and profitability. This approach views employees as a means to an end, with the primary goal being to maximize profits (FutureLearn, n.d.). Hard HR emphasizes the following:
- Productivity: Hard HR concentrates on employee productivity and aims to optimize output. This approach stresses efficiency and cost-saving measures to enhance profitability.
- Performance evaluation: Hard HR prioritizes performance management and utilizes performance metrics to assess employees. This approach focuses on identifying and addressing performance deficiencies to enhance productivity.
- Outcome-oriented: Hard HR centers on achieving outcomes and gives precedence to organizational objectives over employee well-being. This approach highlights the significance of producing results and fulfilling targets.
The primary benefits of implementing Hard Human Resource Management (HRM) include effective supervision of employees, cost savings, and the ability for companies to adjust output levels as needed. It also enables greater centralization and control by managers, increases overall efficiency, and standardizes processes, leading to equality and diversity among employees, which encourages competition and ultimately helps the industry (expertsmind, n.d.).
However, the hard HRM approach also has its drawbacks. Although it may result in increased production efficiency in the short term, this efficiency is not always sustainable. Employees may become exhausted, micromanaged, and undervalued, leading to reduced morale, high turnover rates, and decreased productivity. Therefore, employers should be cautious not to discourage care and respect for employees while trying to achieve production efficiency (expertsmind, n.d.).
